Nearly every home I work in has a room or two that either doesn’t get cool enough in the summer or stays cold in the winter. These are what I call problem rooms. These rooms are usually the biggest problem around the holidays when we have guests over.

There are a number of factors that make these rooms not cool or heat well. The first thing I would check is the door. If the door to the room has no space between the floor and the carpet then the A/C cannot pull stale air out of the room to properly condition it. You can tell if this is the problem by leaving the door to the room open and seeing if the rooms still vary in temperature from the rest of the house. If leaving the door open fixes the problem then what you need to do is remove that door from the frame and (using an electric saw) trim about an inch or so from the bottom of the door to allow more air to pass through.door trim

Hire a contractor if you do not feel comfortable doing so.
If the problem is not a matter of door space then what you have is a duct design problem. Air is delivered to individual rooms through several small ducts.

hvac_duct_systemEach duct shares air from the central Heat/AC system. Since air takes the path of least resistance; rooms with longer ducts and ducts with excessive bends or twists will not receive enough air. To check this problem. Turn on your system and close off ducts that are not in the problem room. If your problem rooms feel more comfortable after doing this then you have an air delivery problem. This is where the duct booster comes in. duct fan The duct booster is a small motor that is installed into the problem duct and helps to deliver more air to the room. The motor comes on when your system is turned on and runs at only 12 watts. That’s nearly six times less than a standard 60 watt light bulb. The unit can be purchased and installed at only $150 with $40 per additional fan.
